چکیده

Langmuir monolayers of semi-fluorinated nonadecylphosphonic acid (F8H11PO3), hexadecylphosphonic acid (H16PO3), and their mixtures were investigated by Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and surface-pressure measurements. Nanometre-scale two-dimensional clusters were observed by AFM in a spread monolayer of pure F8H11PO3 transferred to mica. Two different organized arrangements of clusters were observed. AFM and BAM observations showed that the mixture exhibits a solid phase over a large range of mole fraction and surface pressure, sometimes in coexistence with clusters. With increasing mole fraction of H16PO3, the lateral shape of these clusters remains the same while their organization and their height change.

Semi-fluorinated phosphonic acids form stable nanoscale clusters in Langmuir–Blodgett and self-assembled monolayers

We compared molecular monolayers of semifluorinated phosphonic acids (F8H11PO3, F10H6PO3, F8H8PO3, and F6H10PO3) on mica substrates prepared by two different methods: Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) transfer of pre-formed monolayers from the air–water interface, and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed spontaneously at the interface between mica and solution (with tetrahydrofuran as the solvent). The...

Self-assembly of linactants: micelles and lyotropic liquid crystals in two dimensions.

We report observations of phenomena within two-component Langmuir monolayers that are analogous to surfactant self-assembly in 3D solutions. A partially fluorinated fatty phosphonic acid played the role of 2D surfactant (linactant), and a perfluorinated fatty acid acted as the 2D solvent. Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers were prepared from mixtures of these compounds and examined using atomic force...

Langmuir monolayer miscibility of perfluorocarboxylic acids with biomembrane constituents at the air-water interface.

Over the past two or three decades, Langmuir monolayers comprising various fluorinated amphiphiles such as perfluorinated, partially fluorinated, and fluorinated-hydrogenated hybrid molecules at the air-water interface, have been investigated to deepen the understanding of their characteristic phenomena and to explore the mutual interaction of these amphiphiles with biomembrane constituents. La...

Fluorinated Langmuir monolayers are more viscous than non-fluorinated monolayers.

The surface shear viscosity of the liquid expanded phase in Langmuir monolayers of fluorinated alcohols differs by orders of magnitude from the corresponding surface shear viscosity of Langmuir monolayers of their non-fluorinated counterparts. The line tension between the liquid expanded and the gaseous phase on the other hand is of similar magnitude for both fluorinated and non-fluorinated sur...

Nanotribological properties of alkanephosphonic acid self-assembled monolayers on aluminum oxide: effects of fluorination and substrate crystallinity.

Two phosphonic acid (PA) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are studied on three aluminum oxide surfaces: the C and R crystallographic planes of single crystal alpha-alumina (sapphire) and an amorphous vapor-deposited alumina thin film. SAMs are either fully hydrogenated CH3(CH2)17PO3H2 or semifluorinated CF3(CF2)7(CH2)11PO3H2. Atomic force microscope (AFM) topographic imaging reveals that the de...
